FAQs

What is MSDNAA?
The MSDN Academic Alliance (MSDNAA) is a software subscription program for academic departments offering instruction in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).  The goal of the program is to make it easier and less expensive for for students to obtain Microsoft developer tools, platforms, and servers for instructional and research purposes.

Who is eligible for the Computer Science MSDNAA program?

Access to the CS MSDNAA program is determined on a quarter by quarter basis. ANY student enrolled for at least one credit hour in Computer Science (CSCD) during the currently active academic term is eligible to participate in the program. Please note that having a declared major/minor in Computer Science does not in and of itself satisfy the MSDNAA eligibility requirement.

During the add/drop period of each academic quarter, qualifying students will have their campus NetID/iTech User Principal Name (UPN) uploaded to the CS MSDNAA ELMs site (Web based software distribution and management system).

UPNs are in the format username@eastern.ewu.edu

For example, if your campus NetID/iTech account name is jdoe43, then your UPN is jdoe43@eastern.ewu.edu

Note: Your UPN is not an email address. @eastern.ewu.edu is simply a suffix that specifies that your campus NetID/iTech account is a member of the eastern.ewu.edu domain.

When does eligibility expire?

Access for eligible students expires 12am the day after the last day of final's week each quarter. The program is closed during acadmic breaks. Please note that it is the responsibility of the student to retrieve resources from the ELMs site (e.g. software images, serial keys, etc) before their eligibility expires.

Are Office desktop apps such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, avaialable through this program?

No, the MSDNAA program was designed to provide development environments, tools, and apps for students studying STEM disciplines. Microsoft does NOT consider the Office desktop apps to be development resouces.

If students get software through MSDNAA, do they have unlimited usage of the software?
No, MSDNAA software is intended for use in academic pursuits of STEM disciplines: schoolwork, research, academic projects, and so on are all acceptable uses.

Can students keep these tools after they graduate?
Yes, this license is perpetual and nontransferable. You don’t have to uninstall the tools, but the stipulation of “academic use only” does not change.

In one class, students used MSDNAA tools to create a product that is so good they plan to sell it. Can products made with MSDNAA software be sold commercially?
Yes, the only stipulation is the purchase of commercial licenses for all tools used in the creation of a new product prior to selling the product in a commercial situation.

How to burn an ISO file to a CD in order to install the software?
ISO images are images of a disk containing all files as well as boot files necessary for automatically launching the installation wizard. These files need to be burned to a disk specifically as an image, instead of a 'data' disk, which will extract the ISO into the required setup files. By burning the file to a disk as a data disk, you will simply end up with an .ISO file on the disk, which cannot be used for the installation.

Once you downloaded the software, you will end up with the ISO file which by default is saved in the C:\temp folder. You will have to burn it on a CD to make it “bootable.” If you are running Windows 7, Microsoft has provided built-in capability for burning an ISO file to disc. Simply right-click the ISO file and select 'Burn disc image'. If you are not running Windows 7, you need special software to do this. If you don’t have one , try the following:

A free disk burning program, Active@ ISO Burner, is available by NTFS.com that will allow you to burn ISO or disk images to a disk.

See this page for additional resources and instructions.
